THRIVE REGIONAL OUTREACH
Women’s Capacity Development and Leadership in Kenya
overview of thrive outreach
Going beyond Nairobi, THRIVE is currently extending outreach to selected marginalized counties in Kenya, including Kilifi, Lamu and Turkana with private / institutional support.
With relevant sponsorship, THRIVE plans to implement intensive and exciting short training courses at a county level targeting key women members of local civil society (or regional government). THRIVE’s 1 year training course ‘Gender and Leadership’ , includes modules such as gender transformative approaches, feminist leadership, digital inclusion and climate change adaptation.
·THRIVE aims to formulate long-term partnership(s) with individuals/ organisations/businesses that are interested in women’s capacity development and leadership in Kenya.
strategy for women’s regional development in kenya
To date, THRIVE’s professional development training for women in aid and development has been heavily focused in Nairobi or online. THRIVE is now keen to extend outreach to selected marginalized counties in Kenya, with sponsorship by interested businesses and institutions. This includes Lamu and Kilifi counties, and possibly Meru or Turkhana.
Kenya ranks among the Medium Human Development Countries but has a Gender Inequality Index (GII) of 0.545, placing it 134 out of the 189 countries and still a ‘poor performer’ in key gender measurements. [1]
Outside of Nairobi, there is significant disparity in regional development and inclusion, with some counties lagging behind in multiple dimensions. One of the most unequal counties in the country, Kilifi county suffers from low development and gender indicators, and has a higher than national average Gender Inequality Index of 0.67.[2]
Persisting inequality between men and women is driven by uneven opportunities for education, conservative social norms and poverty. This influences all aspects of local development including family health, social development and economic growth.
women’s leadership in Lamu 2024-2025
With private sponsorship, THRIVE is currently running a 12 month training programme in Lamu with Lamu Women’s Alliance and female civil society leaders. THRIVE’s project in LAMU includes (10-15) selected representatives of Lamu Women’s Alliance (LAWA) and CSOs on gender and leadership.
Training includes modules on Gender TransformativeAapproaches (GTAs), principles of feminist leadership, women and digital inclusion, countering GBV, and women as leaders in climate change adaptation and resilience.
THRIVE’s training aims to build capacity of women leaders to spearhead gender and development in LAMU, & support women's rights, safety, inclusion and participation.
In line with THRIVE's training philosophy, trainees are expected to pass on key messages to their community women’s groups (400 women).
sponsorship and long-term partnerships with interested businesses / organizations
To support women in other marginalised regions in Kenya, THRIVE is now keen to formulate long-term partnership(s) with progressive and keen institutions and/or business(es) that are interested in inclusive and sustainable development, particularly related to local women’s participation and leadership.
The total basic cost of the 1 year on-site/virtual training support at county level is approx. 6,000 USD (excl. local in-kind contribution).
